Congratulations to Jack Grote, Special Olympics Athlete

21 year old Jack Grote was all smiles when he visited Dr. Shah sporting the three medals he earned at the Special Olympics Oregon Summer Games in Newberg this past July. He took gold in the 4×400 relay and silver in both the 200 and 400 meter sprints.

The Summer State Games are the state championship competitions in track & field, bocce, golf, and softball for Special Olympics athletes in Oregon. All participants have trained in their hometowns for eight weeks prior to the Summer Games and have qualified to compete at the Summer Games at a regional level competition.

A big thanks to the coaches who are “wonderful” says Jack’s mom Lois. They teach sport skills to athletes 8 years-of-age and older who have intellectual disabilities such as Autism, as is the case for Jack. Each coach volunteers their time over the eight weeks of training and throughout the competition.  Jack’s coach was Cindy Miguel, an adaptive martial arts instructor in Oregon.

This is Jack’s second year on the track & field team and he plans to participate in soccer this fall. In addition to being a member of the Special Olympics team, Jack enjoys his job at Papa Murphy’s.
