Paula Heimberg, MD

Dr. Heimberg grew up in New Bedford, a small factory town and fishing village in Massachusetts. She became fascinated with science in high school. As a teenager she began working as a medical assistant which she continued to do even during medical school. While at Loyola Medical School she was inspired by an instructor, which led to her love of pediatric medicine.

Dr. Heimberg completed a neonatology fellowship at Northwestern University, two years of general pediatrics residency at St. Louis University Medical School and one year at Duke University. After training she joined the National Health Services Corps. For two years she served inner-city Boston and the rural south. She received a Distinguished Service Award for outstanding service in setting up systems to improve health in the latter.

In 1982 Dr. Heimberg joined a pediatric practice in Beverly Massachusetts where, in addition to providing care for her patients she taught residents, medical students, nursing students, and advance practitioner students.

In 2016, after 34 years, Dr. Heimberg left her successful practice to join her family who had relocated to Portland.

Dr. Heimberg is an avid biker, enjoys yoga (most days), swing dancing and cooking.

There are many ways to be a successful parent. I see my role as a pediatrician to be a cheerleader for parents and encourage their style with gentle guidance. There is no greater pleasure as a pediatrician than watching children and parents grow and be successful in their own unique way.”
