Frequently asked questions

What is a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)?

There are many types of human coronaviruses including some that commonly cause mild upper-respiratory tract illnesses. This is a novel coronavirus that has not been detected before. This strain of coronavirus is different than those that cause common colds and in certain instances can be life threatening. Its name is derived from the year it was first detected (2019) and is often abbreviated as COVID-19, CO’ standing for ‘corona,’ ‘VI’ for ‘virus,’ and ‘D’ for disease.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Symptoms of the disease include: - Fever - Cough - Shortness of breath - Severe respiratory distress Per the CDC, symptoms of COVID-19 may appear in as few as 2 days or as long as 14 days after exposure.

Why do some people get very ill from COVID-19?

Whenever our bodies are exposed to viruses, our immune systems are stimulated into action. From all indications, in a subset of patients exposed to COVID-19, their immune systems go into overdrive and production of numerous inflammatory cells that can lead to damage of normal tissue, particularly the lungs. For this reason, some patients are placed on respiratory support.

How is COVID-19 spread?

Initial cases of the disease are thought to have originated from a live animal market in Wuhan City, China. Subsequently, the virus has been spread from person-to-person. Respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes from someone with the disease are passed to others. These droplets can land in the mouth or the nose or people nearby or inhaled in the lungs. It may also spread by touching contaminated surfaces, but it is unclear as to how long the virus can stay viable when on different surfaces.

What should I do if I think my child might have COVID-19?

Contact our office immediately. One of our providers will speak with you to assess the probability of exposure and/or likelihood of potential infection with COVID-19. Based on answers given to our providers, patients may be asked to isolate themselves within their homes and await evaluation by the public health authority or be asked to come to the clinic or go the emergency room for evaluation.
