“ I enjoy helping others learn and grow to understand themselves better. We all need to keep moving forward and continue to learn and polish skills to evolve into who we want to be. As a therapist, my job is to hold the flashlight to illuminate a path as a guide helping others discover what direction they want to go. I will walk with you until you have the skills to walk alone.”
About Kathryn
“Kat” grew up in Eastern Washington where she camped, fished with her family, and played competitive sports. She moved to Portland to escape the long cold winters as she will trade snow for rain any day. Her passion has always been creating. She started out as an art major and discovered art therapy to be an exciting direction to pursue.
Kat received her master’s degree in art therapy and Mental Health Counseling from Marylhurst University. She has a holistic approach incorporating mind, body and spirit, and uses mindfulness and meditation to help others reduce anxiety and stay centered for overall wellness. She utilizes art therapy to help people process feelings and emotions in a safe and non-threatening way. Her focus is building on skills with a strength-based model to help clients overcome their challenges. Kat believes therapeutic relationships are built on acceptance and establishing safety and trust; this takes time and commitment. For Kat, witnessing someone grow in self-discovery is the greatest reward as a therapist.
Fun Facts
Favorite childhood memory…
I loved hanging out with my elderly neighbors and my grandparents. They always loved to see me and listen to the stories about my adventures. They would hang my artwork in their house proudly and always had a bag of Brach’s candy to choose from. They taught me how to bake pies, plant seeds and garden and go out at night to get night crawlers (worms) for fishing.
My approach to care
I use a holistic approach incorporating mind, body and spirit, and use mindfulness and medication to help others reduce anxiety and stay centered for an overall wellness approach.
In my spare time…
I am an artist and enjoy painting and sculpture. I am an avid gardener and spend a lot of time in my greenhouse and garden. I work with the Oregon Ravens Professional Women’s football team and enjoy working with athletes. I am a loyal fan of the Seattle Storm WNBA team and travel to Seattle often to games.
